A rich country pretending to be poor
I certainly have no time for Imelda Marcos. Why she isn?t in jail entirely escapes me, but for once she got it right. The Philippines is rich in the mineral wealth it owns but remains poor because it doesn?t exploit it.
One of the reasons it doesn?t exploit it is because of the strong opposition to it by various groups, including, sadly, the Church. I say ?sadly? because the Church?s role could be a positive one, not the negative one it now is.
DENR sees good prospects ahead for mining industry
Iloilo City (22 September) -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources sees good prospects ahead for the mining industry in the country. USEC for mining and legal affairs Deinrado Simon D. Dimalibot expressed confidence that the industry?s target of generating US$6-Billion for 23 priority-mining projects by 2010 would be met.
?Last year, we generated investments of $500-Million from four mines, which are only in the exploration or pre-feasibility stages,? he said. ?We expect more investments on the fourth and fifth year, when most of the mines are already in operation.
Mining as a Profession and Calling.
Robert Frost once said in his poem entitled, "The Road not taken", and I quote:
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference".
This poem is not typical to the Filipino students of today.
They choose a college education based on what their parents want. Sometimes, their choice is based on what their high schoolmates; their friends or their neighbours' sons and daughters have chose to enrol in college.
Responsible Mining Drives Growth
'The real battle is between a system whereby earnings from mining will be returned to the national and local governments as well as the people through defined revenue sharing formula versus a system which enriches a few local oligarchs and the politicians that support them while keeping the mass of the people impoverished.
RP vs Dante in bid to lure foreign miners
As plans to open a copper mine in this pineapple-growing patch of the Philippine south began to take shape in the 1990s, opponents from the Catholic Church showed villagers the Hollywood disaster movie "Dante's Peak" and warned that a similar fate awaited them.
