| Steelmaking boom has sent nickel and hard coking coal prices soaring--Scotiabank |
Scotiabank economist Patricia Mohr said LME nickel has been a standout in March and mid-April, yielding a lucrative 61% profit margin over average global breakeven costs including depreciation. Solid gains have also been reported for base metals, gold, silver and molybdenum, which more than offset softer cobalt and uranium prices. Meanwhile, world steel production reached a new record high in March, which significantly boosted iron ore and hard coking coal prices. In her monthly analysis of Scotiabank's Commodity Price Index, Mohr said nickel prices have been bolstered by a pick-up in G7 stainless steel orders "as steel service centres restock depleted inventories-in the face of ongoing strikes at Vale's Canadian operations in Sudbury and Voisey's Bay (accounting for more than 10% of world mine supplies)."

| Semirara profit jumps to P1.81B |
MANILA, Philippines—Publicly listed Semirara Mining Corp. posted a net income of P1.81 billion in 2009, more than double of the P796.4-million profit in 2008.
In a filing with the Philippine Stock Exchange, Semirara said the improved net income was due to a 35-percent increase in total revenue to P11.5 billion in 2009 from P8.49 billion in 2008.
According to Semirara, its revenue was boosted largely by high coal prices and a healthy sales volume.
