First weather forecasters, then pilots. Who's next?

Amid the exodus of weather forecasters and pilots to "greener pastures," the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also expressed alarm Tuesday over the increasing number of geologists and mining engineers leaving government service to pursue their career in private firms that offers better paying jobs.

Apex to reopen Maco Mine
DAVAO CITY—The Apex Mining Co., declared anew by its new owners as a Philippine gold-mining company, has vowed to restart the operation of its gold mines in Maco, Compostela Valley.

The strength of its mining potential in Masara mines in Maco, said Emelita C. Fabro, chief of corporate relation and administration, would not only consolidate the company under new management, but also to carry on its plan to expand its global mining operation.  She said the mines have at least 26 years of extractable mineral resources.

The current annual production target for the operation of its Masara mines was placed at 25,000 to 30,000 ounces.  The company wants to increase its production target this year by 50 percent or to at least 50,000 ounces.

Surge in investments turning Caraga as RP mining capital
Butuan City – The Caraga region is emerging as the Philippines’ mining capital with mushrooming mining investments, both foreign and domestic, officials said Monday.

Owing to its fresh water that encompasses the borders of the provinces of Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur, Northeastern Mindanao or the Caraga region is where the Philippines’ largest deposits of gold, nickel, chromite, manganese, base metals, and silver ore are found.

Mining is considered as the engine of growth in Northeastern Mindanao.

Provincial environment code has far-reaching implications
GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- The controversial environment code of South Cotabato that bans open-pit mining will adversely affect development of the province's coal deposits, a provincial executive admitted.

South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance P. Fuentes, who has yet to enact the code into law, said the implication of the ordinance will go beyond the copper and gold venture of foreign-backed Sagittarius Mines, Inc.

"Our coal resources in Ned, Lake Sebu [town] is best mined through open-pit method also, thus investments there will likely be hampered by the environment code," she told reporters last week, adding some 12,000 families will be affected by the ordinance.

Outlook for mining upbeat
THE PHILIPPINE MINING INDUSTRY could be headed for a good year given higher metal prices and the prospect of more investments, officials and analysts said.

The value of metallic mineral production rose by 28% in the first quarter, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) reported, and a trade official said the sector overall was expected to achieve "moderate investment growth ... particularly towards the end of the year."

The potential impact of a provincial government’s looming ban on open-pit mining was discounted and an industry observer also noted that the successful conduct of the May 10 national elections was boosting market confidence and could fuel investments.

Board of Investments managing head Elmer C. Hernandez, in a speech at the 1st Mining Engineers’ Convention in Davao last week, said the government was optimistic as "the global economy is slowly positioning for the economic rebound."

Steelmaking boom has sent nickel and hard coking coal prices soaring--Scotiabank
Scotiabank economist Patricia Mohr said LME nickel has been a standout in March and mid-April, yielding a lucrative 61% profit margin over average global breakeven costs including depreciation.

Solid gains have also been reported for base metals, gold, silver and molybdenum, which more than offset softer cobalt and uranium prices.

Meanwhile, world steel production reached a new record high in March, which significantly boosted iron ore and hard coking coal prices.

In her monthly analysis of Scotiabank's Commodity Price Index, Mohr said nickel prices have been bolstered by a pick-up in G7 stainless steel orders "as steel service centres restock depleted inventories-in the face of ongoing strikes at Vale's Canadian operations in Sudbury and Voisey's Bay (accounting for more than 10% of world mine supplies)."
